Lily Pad is an interactive sound and light sculpture consisting of floating lily pads
and arum-lily-shaped fountains. When the arum lilies fill up with water and tip over, they pour onto the
floating lily pads below, activating a sensor, triggering the pad to illuminate and playing a synthesized
tone.
This creates random musical compositions. In addition, touch sensitive lily pads were placed near
the water's edge, allowing the audience to interact with the sculpture, influencing the music and creating an
ensemble between humans and the digital and natural world.

An experienced operations professional and 35-year veteran of the creative industry, Brendan began his advertising life as a copywriter before becoming a Creative Director and Partner at Hero, an award-winning South African advertising agency. His advertising knowledge ensures the work is aligned to brand strategy, and his experience in managing large projects is the ground on which Fabric stands.
Fifteen years ago, Brendan co-founded Soapbox Films, a successful corporate, Virtual Reality and documentary film production company.
A multi-talented artist and engineer who brings a unique perspective to the intersections of these seemingly disparate fields. His diverse experience in art, science, engineering, music and design has always maintained a connecting thread: taking concepts into reality, working from a bird's-eye view and marrying creative ideas with technical, hands-on expertise.
He holds a postgraduate degree in Materials Science (Summa Cum Laude), a degree in Biochemistry and Genetics, and qualifications as a full-stack developer. He also has a love of traditional handcraft and fabrication.
We feel incredibly fortunate to have crossed paths with the talented team at Fabric, first at Luminocity 2026, where their stunning Lily Pad installation became one of the standout features of the entire event. Nikolas and Brendan captured exactly what Luminocity was about. A visually and technically striking installation that drew crowds and sparked genuine collaboration between artists.
That connection carried forward, and HOTT3D was thrilled to team up with Fabric again at the Africa Energy Forum 2026. Their Lily Pad installation brought a sense of calm and intrigue to the central lounge, cutting through the usual noise of a corporate conference and giving guests a moment to pause and take notice.
Working alongside Fabric has been a genuine highlight. Their craftsmanship, creativity, and collaborative spirit make them a partner we'd recommend without hesitation, and we can't wait to see where the next project takes us together.
Fabric's work at LUMENOCITY connected with people on a genuinely emotional level. In an event filled with light and technology, their artistic approach brought warmth, depth and humanity to the experience. It became one of the pieces people stopped at, spoke about and photographed repeatedly throughout the show. What stood out most was the ability to create something visually striking while still making people feel something. That balance is rare. Fabric added real artistic value to LUMENOCITY and helped elevate the overall experience far beyond a traditional light installation.
